With its arrival, the inaugural season has also begun—and will run for a whole six months. Gone is the old stacking matchmaking rating MMR value, replaced entirely by a total of seven league tiers. Within each tier, players will have to earn five stars in order to progress to the next league. Players who wish to earn the Ancient and Divine medals, however, must grind it out in solo queue only. In all cases, though, solo queue will have a bigger impact on progression. Should a player successfully go up in rank, their medal will change to reflect their progression. The corresponding medal will never go back down to a lower tier during that season, even if a player loses enough games in a row. The old MMR-based leaderboards have been wiped completely with the update, and all previous MMR values have been removed from view. An expanded version of the leaderboards, which includes one exclusive to Divine ranked players, has been implemented to replace the decommissioned ones.
Ranked Dota 2 Matches Will Soon Require A Phone Number
This is a short playdota article I wrote to explain matchmaking systems. I won’t pretend to be an expert, but I have an understanding of matchmaking algorithms. If anyone would like to correct any of my points, feel free to do so.
This line is more demanding in terms of hero pick and players skills.
Dota 2 active player count at lowest point since What’s causing the decline? In the last 30 days, the highest number of players logged on simultaneously peaked at less than , —the second lowest number it has been at since July At the end of that month, peak numbers could not even reach , Those numbers were boosted by around six percent in August, presumably by the hype generated by the International 7.
Still, these statistics are a far cry from those posted in and Dota 2 recorded peak numbers of over 1 million several times in this period. Even January and February of this year were both still able to hold at least a million, with the numbers falling to six digits in March. In July, nearly , active players stopped playing the game. The shrinkage of the playerbase could be attributed to many different factors, but there are a few immediately quantifiable ones.
So far its momentum shows no signs of slowing down , with more than 1. Dota 2 and similar games such as League of Legends require a much larger time investment compared to games like PUBG, which can have very short queue turnaround times—especially if you are eliminated early into a match. Secondly, there is the fact that the current meta has been around for a long time.

This mode is aimed at experienced players who want to play in a more competitive environment and know their matchmaking rating MMR. Dota 2 matchmaking has always calculated MMR and used it to form matches; in ranked matchmaking we make that MMR visible.

Calibration phase duration is 10 games each for solo or team Two ratings, solo and team Entry requirement: Even if players cover the entry requirement, they might not opt-in to play ranked. So, the ranked distribution landscape is completely different as a result. Distributions The blog post gave us the distribution numbers for unranked. There is no reason for me to doubt them.
If the hero does this at the beginning of a lane and keeps moving forward with the creeps while blocking them, this can make a significant impact on where the two creep lines will fight in lane.
You see that in lower MMR areas there are way more players. Thus you will get games faster and your games will theoretically have more even teams not accounting for smurfs or other things. Once you get higher up the MMR ladder professional players have between 5k and 7k MMR you will have less players eligible to play with you, thus waiting times for games increase and you will have less even games.
This is adjusted by the amount of MMR you will get for winning and losing. If you play a game that according to the MMR system you should win, since your team has a higher team MMR than your enemies, you don’t get the 25 MMR for winning, but instead might get 23 if at a slight advantage or even just 2 if highly favoured, this generally opens happens to the guys with highest MMR top on the server.
At the same time, if you lose a game that you’re statistically supposed to win you will lose more than the 25 MMR 27 for slight advantages going up to 50 for games in which you were highly favoured. Please note that if you are better than your teammates and enemies, you will have an easier time climbing in MMR if you play a snowball hero in the midlane, since you can have the biggest game impact with those.
By playing hard support for people that can’t efficiently farm and don’t know who to focus during a fight and generally when to fight you lower your chances of stomping. Because winning more lanes than the enemy almost safely assures you the victory in lower MMR regions, since people lack the understanding of when to fight and when to avoid fights. Also try to pick what is best for your team.
This post will is designed primarily to Inform how the Dota 2 Matchmaking works Clear up some popular misconceptions Promote discussion I’ll be drawing heavily on dev posts made by Valve developer EricTams. You’ll find a link to the posts I reference at the bottom. The skill brackets serve no purpose in matchmaking, and just because two people are in the same bracket doesn’t mean they are in the same matchmaking pool. It is a nice way to tell how you fair in general, but they’re primary function is to find games to WATCH.
A non-partied member of your team early abandons a normal match.
Although you won’t get the number MMR anymore, smurfing still works and this method is still applicable for the new matchmaking system, which is the medal system – Many players are struggling to get the high MMR Matchmaking Rating that they have wanted. Most of them searched online for answers, “How to get 4k MMR? How to get 5k MMR? Most of the people who followed those articles ended up being disappointed in their MMR.

Dota 2 Matchmaking Stats
I will go step by step so this will be a long guide. I will be writing it as question answers, so if you want the answer to a specific question, and that is not in this guide, you can ask me below. I am not a Dota 2 official. All the information depicted blow is based mainly on my detailed research and somewhat personal experience Which may be less than many of you.
There might be some stuff which you may not agree, but remember all the data is taken from the official and very reliable sources.
As a result, these players come out with some pretty bizarre and unique strategies to get the upper hand over the other team.
This figure is assumed to be skewed upwards, as it is generally believed that newer and less skilled players are less likely to display their MMR publicly, and therefore are not considered in the data analysis. Uncertainty Uncertainty is the standard deviation of a player’s MMR. Players with high uncertainty are more likely to be matched with players that differ more greatly in skill level, and vice versa.
New accounts with few games played tend to have high uncertainty, while older accounts with many games played tend to have low uncertainty. Since normal and ranked matchmaking are tracked separately, a player who has many normal games will still experience high uncertainty in ranked matchmaking if they have only played a few ranked games, and vice versa. Higher uncertainty leads to larger MMR adjustments after each match, and lower uncertainty leads to smaller adjustments.
Highly uncertain matches are sometimes called swing games because their outcomes are “breakthrough” moments that are indicative of a player’s MMR progression or regression. Conversely, unexpected match outcomes will cause an increase in uncertainty. Party In general, parties receive bonus MMR when searching for matches. This is meant to compensate for superior party coordination, as well as partying with highly skilled members. Parties’ skill and experience values are counted as an aggregate, not individual for each player.
Parties will receive a higher adjusted MMR. Updating MMR will not be changed if: A non-partied member of your team early abandons a normal match.

Dota 2 Boost
Earlier today, Valve finally addresses its stance on the highly requested and anticipated ranked matchmaking system and a legitimate matchmaking rating feature or MMR. In their blog post, Valve reveals that the ranked matchmaking feature will be added on the Dota 2 client in the next major update. Valve also gives a sneak peek on the upcoming features. This mode is aimed at experienced players who want to play in a more competitive environment and know their matchmaking rating MMR.
Dota 2 matchmaking has always calculated MMR and used it to form matches; in ranked matchmaking we make that MMR visible. Valve also stated that the MMR is only visible for ranked matchmaking only.
Dota 2 features a list of over a hundred different characters, each as diverse and flexible as the next.
To balance the skill level and provide the fairest competition, Valve plans to introduce a ranked matchmaking system for players who desire competitive match-ups. The next major update introduces a feature that calculates matchmaking rating MMR. To calculate your MMR, the rating unlocks after games. In order to enter the ranked matches, all players in a party must unlock the mode.
The ranked mode calculates your MMR after 10 initial games. To avoid getting discouraged by opponent MMRs or feel ashamed of your own, a player’s MMR stays visible to friends only. The MMR updates after each match based on your performance. While the MMR calculations account for your individual performance, Wins and Losses primarily drive changes your rating. And the rating doesn’t apply universally across all playlists — your MMR changes for different queues.
If you only play ranked matchmaking with a party, then your MMR remains unchanged when queuing in solo matchmaking. The matchmaking also considers other criteria such as party size, language preference and ranges in skill. Although Wins and Losses drive your MMR, Valve acknowledges that the amount of wins doesn’t indicate true player skill.
To further explain the criteria for matchmaking and the data taken into consideration, you can read the full explanation on the DOTA 2 blog.
