But after recently concluding forty years of ownership, please indulge me the privilege of sharing its story. Maybe we can think of this as the Impala Sport Coupe of bikes, if that helps. The story begins with a much cooler bike and my first totalled vehicle. I had been a dedicated Stingray rider since my 7th birthday, but the old gold Stingray was showing its age and I was ready for something new. My friends were getting upsized five speeds. Kevin next door had been on a Schwinn Typhoon for awhile, but Tim down the street got a new Collegiate which sort of set the curve for the rest of us.

I asked the owner if the bikes were for sale and when she said yes i walked over to take a look. One bike was a cheap women’s bike made by Huffy. I quickly ignored that one and looked at the other bike.
I was skeptical about the open rear parallelogram frame design, but it seems quite stiff despite the lack of triangulation.
AGV has one five star motorcycle helmet among those tested and ranked by the British government’s SHARP project , the only ranking system of its kind for motorcycle helmets. This Canadian company already has a hockey helmet made with a unique air-filled bladder as the liner. There is a special valve that lets a small amount of air expand a membrane into a cylindrical chamber when an impact starts.
When the impact exceeds 30g the membrane contacts a sharp dart at the end of the chamber and the liner deflates through holes at the end at a controlled rate. The helmet becomes loose, signaling the wearer to replace the liner. Airium says the helmet will reduce both linear and rotational acceleration forces better than standard liners. We don’t know when a bicycle version will be marketed.

The bike was a disaster–a real rust bucket–but as I tore it down, I was astounded to see that it was largely unused and almost completely original. None of the bearings had any visible wear, and even the brake pads, gears, chain, and cable sheaths were ones that came new with the bike. The only nonoriginal part was the saddle; I assume that the original leather one died a moldy death as the bike sat decaying in a series of garages.
My philosophy of old bikes probably won’t be approved by most purists. I am not interested in creating museum pieces; I have no interest in a bike I can’t ride. I don’t have the time, inclination, or energy to research any bike in detail and to determine its original configuration, down to the last lockwasher.
The bike is in reasonably good riding condition.

I put together both bikes earlier this year, using vintage components, with an emphasis on SunTour. I also set aside the Deore bio-pace triple crankset and replaced it with a drilled Stronglight 99 double. The Appaloosa was purchased as a frame, along with a new b wheelset.
I bought a first-generation Dura Ace shift lever set when they first came out.
If it is a Sturmey Archer it has the hub date stamped near the oil hole. It is likely a Sachs; I recall there is a date on the three speed hub. We had an old bike show up at the LBS that I worked at in It looked weird, as it had gold flake paint sprayed all over usually the sign of a stolen bike. I looked at it carefully as it was incredibly light, and had a four speed rear freewheel and “fly” wing nuts. It turned out to be a Paramount, as we found out with carefully removing the paint.
Oscar Watsyn Cycles Chicago built this bike for Schwinn. Johncs78 – Viscount is English a. History[ edit ] According to Frank J. Raleigh America ordered 2, bicycles from Tano and Company of Osaka but their parent company in England, TI-Raleigh, disapproved — concerned that the Tano-built bikes were too well made and would have outsold their own British bikes. Raleigh’s sales agent, Mitchell Weiner, who was reading The New Centurions at the time, took receipt of the bikes, placed Centurion decals on the bikes and marketed them successfully, subsequently forming Western State Imports after merging with Rick Wilson’s company, Wil-Go of Santa Clara, California.
Cozy Yamakoshi served as the company’s product development manager, designing the bike’s frames, coordinating the manufacture of the bikes by Japanese manufacturers, and importing the bikes into the US. The head tubes look as if they were fillet brazed , but they weren’t. The head tube and the tapered segments that lead into the the top tube and down tube were actually made from two special forgings that were “electro-forged” welded together down the centerline, then ground smooth, so the seam is not usually visible. There are necked-down parts that fit into the top tube and down tube, like internal lugs. Muller has a very detailed explanation of this process, in his superb article: Inside the Varsity , which is now on this site.
